What is Effective Communication

Answering the question of what is effective communication might not easy because effective communication is an art and skill that is developed after continued practice and experience. The predefined set of skills required for an effective communication process are as follows:

Obedience: One must have keen observing skills to gain more knowledge and information.

Clarity and brevity: Messages should be organized in simple words, and should be clear and precise to establish the desired impact on the recipient.

Listening and Understanding: The most important skill in a person is that he must be a good listener, alert and patient. He must be able to understand and interpret messages well.

Emotional Intelligence: A person must be emotionally aware and able to influence others from within.

Self-Efficacy: In addition, he must have confidence in himself and his ability to achieve communication goals.

Confidence: Being one of the important communication skills, self-confidence increases the feasibility of the message conveyed.

Respectfulness: Delivering messages politely and respecting the recipient’s values, beliefs, opinions and ideas is the essence of effective communication.

Non-Verbal Communication: To connect with the receiver in a better way, the sender must engage non-verbal means of communication as well. This includes gestures, facial expressions, eye contact, posture, etc.

Selection of the Right Media: Choosing the right media for communication is also a skill. You need to choose a medium that fits the situation, message priority, recipient’s point of view, etc.

Providing Feedback: Effective communication is always a two-way process. One has to receive as well as give feedback to put the other person’s perspective forward as well.

Now you have a complete understanding on what is effective communication. It is a social skills to convey your message to others through a process of negotiation in reaching mutual understanding.
