Data is a record of a collection of facts. Data is the plural form of datum, derived from the Latin meaning “something given”. In everyday use, data means a statement that is accepted as it is. This statement is the result of measuring or observing a variable whose form can be in the form of numbers, words, or images.

In science (scientific), facts are collected to become data. The data is then processed so that it can be stated clearly and precisely that it can be understood by others who have not directly experienced it themselves. That is called a description. Sorting a lot of data according to the similarities or differences they contain is called classification.

In the subject of managements, data is characterized as something raw and has no context. Data simply exists and has no significance outside of his being. Data can appear in various forms, regardless of whether it can be taken advantage of or not.

Data can also be referred to as follows:

  • Data are facts in the form of numbers, characters, symbols, pictures, signs, cues, writings, sounds, sounds that represent the actual situation which is then used as input for an Information System.

  • External Data: data from outside an organization that can describe the factors that may affect the work of an organization. For example: people’s purchasing power affects the sales of a company.

The types of data according to the method of obtaining it:

  • Primary data (primary data): data collected by an individual/organization directly from the object under study and for the benefit of the study concerned which can be in the form of interviews, observations.
  • Secondary data (secondary data): data obtained/collected and put together by previous studies or published by various other agencies. Usually, indirect sources are in the form of official documentation and archives.

The types of data according to the time of collection:

  • Cross section data, namely data collected at a certain time (at a point of time) to describe the conditions and activities at that time. For example; research data using a questionnaire.
  • Periodic data (time series data), namely data collected from time to time to see the development of an event/activity during that period. For example, the development of the money supply, the prices of 9 kinds of staple goods for the population.
