Freelancers are individuals who carry out services at a cost, be it hourly, per word, or per project. In other words, freelancers exchange time with money.
Therefore, you need to have skills that other people want to buy. In this case, you are free to be creative! Many people think they don’t have the experience to become freelancers, but I challenge you to evaluate your history.
Have you ever worked? If yes, that means you have the skills that other people want to buy! The easiest transition from employees to freelancers is to start with the things you have done.
For example, before I became a freelancer, I worked in the startup marketing team. So when I decided to become a freelancer, what did I do? I started selling marketing services (social media management, copywriting, public relations campaigns, etc.) to startups! It was a simple transition because I could use the work I did as an employee as my portfolio as a freelancer.
If you still think you don’t have the skills to become a freelancer, there are types of freelance work that you should consider for example being a virtual assistant.
I consider virtual assistants as entry level jobs in the freelance world. Just like a secretary who can become an office manager, virtual assistants can become online business managers, marketing consultants, web designers, and really other “high level” freelance positions!
What is a virtual assistant? A virtual assistant helps a person or business with almost all services that can be imagined. There is a virtual assistant for:
• travel bookings
• scheduling appointments
• email management
• graphic design
• social media management
• proofreading
For example, you want to be a professional freelance editor, but you only do some editing work and are not confident if you are qualified to become a full-time freelance editor. You can start as a virtual assistant that offers proofreading services. The difference is that you will be paid less than a freelance editor. In the end, you can promote yourself to the editor and charge a higher rate because you have built your portfolio as a virtual assistant.
ACTION STEPS: If you have squeezed your brain to the fullest, but STILL don’t have the skills to become freelancers: learn new skills through online courses!
