How to Change Default Browser on Any Device

Why Should You Change Your Default Browser?

You click a link in an email, and instead of opening in your favorite browser, it launches in one you never use. Sound familiar?

Setting a default browser ensures:
✔️ All links open in your preferred browser (Chrome, Firefox, Edge, etc.)
✔️ A seamless browsing experience without constant app switching
✔️ Syncs bookmarks, history, and passwords across devices

Here’s how to make the switch—whether you use Windows, Mac, Android, or iPhone.

How to Change Default Browser on Windows 10 & 11

Step 1: Open Default Apps Settings

  1. Press Windows + I to open Settings.
  2. Go to Apps → Default apps.

Step 2: Set Your Preferred Browser

  1. Scroll down to “Web browser”.
  2. Click the current browser (e.g., Microsoft Edge).
  3. Select your preferred browser (Chrome, Firefox, Brave, etc.).

Done! All links will now open in your chosen browser.

How to Change Default Browser on Mac

Step 1: Open System Settings

  1. Click the Apple logo () → System Settings.
  2. Go to Desktop & Dock → Default web browser.

Step 2: Select Your New Default Browser

  1. Click the dropdown menu.
  2. Choose your preferred browser (Chrome, Safari, Firefox, etc.).

💡 Note: If your browser isn’t listed, make sure it’s installed and relaunch it.

How to Change Default Browser on Android

  1. Open Settings → Apps → Default apps.
  2. Tap “Browser app”.
  3. Select your preferred browser (Chrome, Firefox, Brave, etc.).

📌 For Samsung & Xiaomi Users:

  • Go to Settings → Apps → (⋮) → Default apps → Browser.

How to Change Default Browser on iPhone (iOS)

Apple now allows changing the default browser (iOS 14+), but Safari still has some limitations.

Step 1: Install Your Preferred Browser

  1. Download Chrome, Firefox, or Edge from the App Store.

Step 2: Set It as Default

  1. Open Settings → Scroll down to your browser (e.g., Chrome).
  2. Tap “Default Browser App”.
  3. Select your preferred browser.

⚠️ Note: Some Apple apps (like Mail) may still open links in Safari.

Troubleshooting: Why Won’t My Default Browser Stay Changed?

🔹 Windows: Microsoft Edge may reset itself. Disable “Let Windows decide” in Edge’s settings.
🔹 Mac: Ensure your browser is updated. Restart your Mac if changes don’t apply.
🔹 Android: Some manufacturers (Samsung, Huawei) have custom settings—check under “Default apps”.
🔹 iPhone: iOS may still use Safari for some links. Use “Open in [Browser]” as a workaround.

Bonus: Make Your Default Browser Stick

To prevent your system from reverting:

  • Windows: Disable Edge’s “Startup boost” in Task Manager.
  • Mac: Keep your preferred browser updated.
  • Android: Disable or uninstall unused browsers.

Take Control of Your Browsing

Now you can:
✔️ Stop links from opening in the wrong browser
✔️ Enjoy a faster, more personalized web experience
✔️ Sync your data across devices effortlessly

These days link building is a real headache.

I remember 2006…2007 and I became nostalgic. With a few blog comments and blogposts you could get first page for a lot of keyword without worries about panda, penguin etc.

The main point I think that isn’t how many link you have but it should be how quality of your links and where you put it. That’s the point.

Hey OkOt – Thanks for sharing a great article. Your advice is very useful for small Businesses just starting out online. So many small Businesses have no idea about Link Building and what mistakes they should avoid.
