If you’re looking for a unique adventure in Texas, Dinosaur Valley State Park should be at the top of your list. Located just outside Glen Rose, this park offers a one-of-a-kind opportunity to walk in the footsteps of dinosaurs — literally.
I made the four-hour drive to see it for myself, and if you’re wondering whether it’s worth the trip, especially with kids, you’re in the right place. Here’s what you need to know before you go.
Where Is Dinosaur Valley State Park?
Dinosaur Valley State Park is located at:
1629 Park Rd 59, Glen Rose, TX 76043
Situated about an hour southwest of Fort Worth, the park is easily accessible by car with well-maintained roads and clear signage. Using GPS will get you there without any issues.
⚠️ Pro tip: Don’t confuse the park with Dinosaur World, a separate attraction you’ll pass on the way. While it might tempt the kids, save it for another day — the real dinosaur tracks are in the state park!
What to Expect When You Arrive
Dinosaur Valley State Park is an outdoor destination where natural beauty and prehistoric history meet. Your experience will largely depend on the weather and your preparation.
Best Time to Visit
- Summer: It can get very hot, especially for young children. If you visit between June and August, come early in the morning or late in the afternoon.
- Winter: Cold weather can also lessen the enjoyment, particularly if you plan to wade in the river.
- Shoulder Seasons (Spring & Fall) offer the most pleasant weather for hiking and exploring.
Visiting with Young Kids (Ages 3–6)
Young children may not fully appreciate the dinosaur tracks, especially on a hot day. When I visited, the heat quickly affected my little one’s mood. If you bring toddlers or preschoolers:
- Pack plenty of water, snacks, and their favorite foods
- Bring sunscreen, hats, and lightweight clothing
- Consider a folding chair and mat for breaks
- Don’t forget extra clothes — the river will tempt them!
After Rain? Check Trail Conditions
It rained heavily the night before my visit, and several trails were closed due to mud and safety concerns. Always check the weather forecast before you go, as rain can make paths slippery and obscure the dinosaur tracks.
The Star of the Show: The Paluxy River
No matter the age, kids (and adults!) love the river. The Paluxy River flows through the park and offers shallow, calm areas perfect for splashing, cooling off, and even spotting more dinosaur prints underwater.
This is why I highly recommend bringing:
- Water shoes
- Towels
- A change of clothes
- A folding chair or blanket for the riverbank
Where to Stay: On-Site & Nearby Accommodations
You can camp inside the park, but reservations are essential — spots fill up quickly. If you prefer a roof over your head, there are several hotels in Glen Rose. I stayed at the La Quinta Inn, which was clean, affordable, and only a short drive from the park.

Other options include:
- Cabins and lodges near the park
- RV sites with hookups
- Budget-friendly motels in Glen Rose
Is Dinosaur Valley State Park Worth It?
As someone who drove four hours to get there, I can confidently say: yes.
Nowhere else in Texas can you see actual dinosaur tracks preserved in a riverbed. The combination of hiking, history, and the refreshing river makes this park a special destination.
Admission is just $7 per adult (ages 12 and up) and free for children under 12. For less than the cost of a movie ticket, your family can enjoy a whole day of adventure.
