Fundamental Needs. Humans buy things to meet their basic needs. Selling items categorize as fundamental needs like clothing or food has an advantage that your market is huge. Yet it also means the competition might be hard as well.

Convenience. Have you ever realized why someone prefers to purchase items at shop A over shop B? They think a store is more convenient than other stores to buy their needs.

Replacing old/expired stuff. Many people buy because they feel the need to replace old things.

Scarcity. There are people who think that certain goods may become scarcer in the future and that as a result of this scarcity they will have a higher value. As a result, they also make purchases in the hope of getting investment value.

Prestige. Someone also likes to buy things for personal satisfaction.

Emotional emptiness. Sometimes humans like to buy for no reason.

Cheap price. Something you’ve always wanted for a long time suddenly became cheap today? Most likely people would buy it under those circumstances.

Added value. When we think the value of an item is greater than its price. Usually these are products you don’t really need; you think it’s too bad not to buy this stuff. Real life example of this added value can be seen through products offers are around the cashier (place of payment / checking out)

Famous brand. When buying a product we don’t know much about, the brand plays an important role. Maybe you need diapers for a family member and picked up Pampers because you already know the brand even if you don’t have children.

Purchase by force. Some encouragement from outside such as uniforms, textbooks or something ordered by the leadership makes it a coercion. Often this happens in emergencies, for example when the roof of a house leaks during the rainy season you might pay anything to stop the leaks.

Personal ego. Sometimes people buy things to impress someone or to be the best among others.

Friend’s favor. Something was bought because your friend pushed for it. Usually this occurs during adolescence.

Returning the favor. This is because someone who rarely gives things suddenly gives you things. Now it’s your turn to do the same at certain moments such as weddings or other special days.

Empathy. Sometimes people buy things from other people because they empathize with that person regardless of the product’s value or level of need.

Addicted. This is a condition outside of normal human needs but this condition does exist and will create more sales than any other cause. Usually, people who are addicted to buying goods cannot explain the reasons why they buy these goods.

Understand Why People Buy from You

Those are some of the reasons why people would buy from you. By understanding it you can start to organize marketing strategy. Emphasize on one of the reasons, build a page to evaluate it, capture the leads contact and follow up marketing.

As a business owner, don’t force leads to purchase, make potential customer understand the benefits of the product offered and let the buyer decide whether to buy or not. That way they will always remember you and come back to you when they need the same product for themselves or for their closest relatives.
