Is Spirit Airlines Really That Bad?

Luggage at Spirit Airlines

For the cheapest price, you won’t get luggage allowance and option to choose where to seat. Furthermore, you must buy carry-on, if any.

In my case, I was traveling light, and I was only spent two days at Las Vegas, so buying luggage is not my priority, yet I must buy carry-on for each trip (Houston-Las Vegas and Las Vegas-Houston)

Seating at Spirit Airlines

You may receive a boarding pass without a seat number. If that happens, there’s no need to worry. I also experienced this on my flight from Houston to Las Vegas. To get a seat number you don’t have to pay. Here’s the step:

Get a Spirit Airlines seat number (If your Boarding Pass does not have a Seat Number)

  • Go to the Gate where your flight is boarding
  • Inform the Gate officer that your boarding pass does not have a seat number
  • Give your boarding Pass to the Gate officer
  • Gate officer will give you a new boarding pass with seat number

What Spirit Airlines Seats Look Like

Spirit airlines seats may not be comfortable for everyone. However, for me (5 ft 6 inch), the knee position is quite comfortable with little space in front of the knee.

I’ve had experience using budget airlines in other countries, and the experience of sitting in the economy seats of Spirit Airlines is not much different from the experience of sitting in the economy seats of common budget airlines.

Is Spirit Airlines Really That Bad?

Of course, there are several factors that will affect passenger ratings of airlines. I’ve used more-premium airline and due to weather disturbances, I was experienced delays after landing because many planes were also delayed due to the weather. As a result, I waited for 1 hour on the plane waiting for the gate, and another 1 hour waiting for my luggage (this experience was not with Spirit Airlines, and I didn’t bring any luggage when using spirit airlines).

The illustration above is only to explain that many factors will play a role in creating a good flying experience.

The main point of my experience using spirit airlines is that I need an urgent flight for the route Houston – Las Vegas at a friendly price. Remember, I only need 2 days in Las Vegas, and I don’t need luggage. So, if I get the question “is Spirit Airlines really that bad?” I can answer it’s not that bad.

Updated November 2022

Unfortunately bad things may happens. It was my trip with family from Orlando – Houston. My friend purchase the tickets for us. I wasn’t aware that my friend has purchased extra weight allowance.

I was trying to weight my luggage at the check in machine. The machine said it was overweight (over than 40lbs). A lady with Spirit Airlines uniform approach me and check my ticket. She said your luggage allowance is 50lbs, so I did not have any issue with my luggage. She suggest me to do the check it across my location (at check-in machine).

There was an older lady, with spirit airline uniform, and ready to do check-in for me. I said to her, I was told to do the check-in here. The older lady ask, are you sure you want to do check-in here? I said again, your friend ask me to do the check in here. The older lady asked my credit card. I wasn’t sure what the older lady want with my credit card.

She did something with her computer, put my credit card number in and told me: “you were charged $10 each (total of $40)”.

I was upset to hear that and asked what for? The older lady asked me I told you before “are your sure you want me to check you in?”, “if I do I will charge you $10 each”.

I asked the older lady to cancel it, she said, that’s not going to happen. I just charged you and not going to be cancelled. I am upset with how the do customer service, how their airport check-in staff given me false / misleading information. I can do check-in for airline myself on the machine, I followed the staff’s suggestion and ended up paying extra $40.

I send email to customer service yet, there is no response at all. Not even email autoresponder to my email notify that I have submitted my complaint and refund request.

It’s not about the amount of $40, but it’s all about how they do business practice, they mislead me, a customer so they can charge me extra $40 to do something that actually free. I believe there is other people has this same experience too.

Book a flight, hotel, and rent a car,
no hidden fees or additional expenses
Customers pay for the prices they see

Well, that is pretty much explain the question “is spirit airlines really that bad?” It’s going to be a mixed experience, yet if you got a bad one, don’t be surprised. They’re trying to take your money as much as they can.
