How to Disable Windows Defender: A Complete Guide

Why Would You Want to Disable Windows Defender?

Windows Defender (now called Microsoft Defender Antivirus) is Microsoft’s built-in security tool. It runs automatically, scanning for viruses, blocking malware, and protecting your PC. But sometimes, you might need to disable it, such as when:

  • Installing another antivirus (to avoid conflicts)
  • Running a game or app that Defender falsely blocks
  • Testing software that triggers security alerts
  • Improving performance on older PCs

However, disabling Defender leaves your PC vulnerable, so only do this if necessary—and re-enable it afterward if you’re not using another antivirus.

This guide covers 4 safe ways to disable Windows Defender (temporarily or permanently).

Method 1: Temporarily Disable Windows Defender (Quick & Easy)

For Windows 10 & 11

  1. Open Windows Security:
  • Press Windows + S, type “Windows Security”, and open it.
  1. Go to “Virus & threat protection”“Manage settings.”
  2. Toggle off:
  • “Real-time protection” (disables active scanning)
  • “Cloud-delivered protection”
  • “Automatic sample submission”

⚠️ Note: Windows Defender will re-enable itself after a short time unless you also disable Tamper Protection (Method 3).

Method 2: Disable Defender Permanently via Group Policy (Pro Edition Only)

If you have Windows 10/11 Pro, Enterprise, or Education, you can disable Defender completely.

Step 1: Open Group Policy Editor

  1. Press Windows + R, type gpedit.msc, and hit Enter.
  2. Navigate to:
Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Microsoft Defender Antivirus

Step 2: Disable Microsoft Defender

  1. Double-click “Turn off Microsoft Defender Antivirus.”
  2. Select “Enabled” → Click “OK.”
  3. Restart your PC.

Done! Defender will stay off until you re-enable it in Group Policy.

Method 3: Disable Tamper Protection (Prevents Defender from Re-enabling)

Windows automatically reactivates Defender unless you disable Tamper Protection:

  1. Open Windows Security“Virus & threat protection.”
  2. Click “Manage settings” under “Virus & threat protection settings.”
  3. Scroll down and toggle off “Tamper Protection.”

Now, Defender won’t turn itself back on after a reboot.

Method 4: Disable Windows Defender via Registry (Advanced Users)

⚠️ Warning: Editing the Registry can break your system. Back up first!

  1. Press Windows + R, type regedit, and hit Enter.
  2. Navigate to:
   HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows Defender
  1. Right-click → New → DWORD (32-bit) Value.
  2. Name it “DisableAntiSpyware” and set its value to 1.
  3. Restart your PC.

How to Re-Enable Windows Defender

Changed your mind? Here’s how to turn Defender back on:

  • If you used Method 1: Just toggle the settings back on in Windows Security.
  • If you used Group Policy (Method 2): Set the policy back to “Not configured.”
  • If you used the Registry (Method 4): Delete the “DisableAntiSpyware” value.
