Truth is, the best way to build backlinks is to not to think about them. Seriously, don't go chasing backlinks and they'll start to roll in on their own.

Any backlink strategy that can be easily duplicated is useless. This includes stuff like blog commenting or forum signatures, even if they're dofollow. Guest blogging is a grey area, but it's certainly not as useful as it used to be.

The fact of the matter is, if you continue to write high quality articles (and yes, the bar is now raised, simple 500 word posts will no longer do) than people will start linking to you naturally as long as you have a good marketing strategy. Of course, networking with other bloggers certainly helps.
